Half Time
I am coming back to England this Friday, bringing a temporary end to my travels for the time being.
The reasons I am coming back are few, though the main one was a good job offer. The overlords at Barclays made me an offer that I could not really refuse. Plus on this contract I will still be able to get to Australia at the end of the year as I had originally planned.
Yes, as a whore the money swung it. But as I thought about it more advantages came to mind. For a start I would have more money to use when I got away again, which would be good. On my current budget I would effectively be broke by the time I touched down in Australia and have to get a job there quickly. This way I do not have to worry about that so much. I would also be able to get a motorbike licence and set about procuring the documents necessary to import a bike back in to England from India. I have a half-baked idea of buying an Enfield bike there and riding it back to the U.K. I would also get to see my friends again, which is always a good thing. Finally I will be able to better plan my onward journey from Australia and get some of that paid for in advance.
Travelling without an aim, other than wanting to be in a continent at a certain time, can be exhausting. Moving from place to place without knowing that you have a base to eventually reach for rest and recuperation can be hard. For example, in India the process of travelling is very wearing, as I have said in previous despatches. Constantly getting hassled plus the heat this time of year makes things hard for a soft white man like me. Having a goal, like riding the bike in India and then out of the country or just getting to see a few cities in Australia and meet friends that I know there, makes travelling more bearable. If I’m honest I was not looking forward to getting back to India from Sri Lanka and simply skipping it and going onto SE Asia did not appeal either.
That’s not to say for a moment that the time spent over the last 4 and a half months was a waste. I am more experienced now and have a better idea of what to expect from my fellow man as I move around their countries. I also have a far better idea of what to pack. This would include leaving things like my sponge collection at home, or not packing 20 shirts where 2 will do.
I also am looking forward to just doing mundane things, like cooking for myself again and taking a bus that will probably not kill me or even using tap water that does not taste funny.
I am using Word to type this thing up. The paper clip is staring at me. This is the first time I have seen the Paperclip for a long time and it scares me slightly. I think he knows what I’m thinking.
I need a good night’s sleep.
